Lindsey Kuster is a Design Engineer at Degenkolb Engineers. She has worked on a variety of projects including new hospital design, existing building seismic evaluations, and historic building preservation projects. She received her master’s degree in 2019 from UCSD and her bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly SLO in 2017.

Peter Maloney, an Associate Principal at Degenkolb Engineers, has over 10 years of diverse experience in structural engineering, including evaluations and retrofits of existing buildings, historic restorations, and new hospital designs. Peter attended UCSD for his masters in Structural Engineering and received his bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly SLO.

Restoring historic buildings presents a unique set of challenges for structural engineers, especially when dealing with archaic materials which have experienced long-term deterioration. This presentation will explore insights gained from two recent projects: a condition assessment and structural evaluation of the iconic Tustin Hangars, and the restoration and reconstruction of the Balboa Botanical Building in Balboa Park.  Through these case studies, we’ll discuss the requirements of the Historic Building Code and the challenges of working on 100-year-old + structures.
