Vik Iso-Ahola is the California Dams Practice Lead and Vice President at Stantec with over 26 years of professional experience working with state and local agencies on a range of dams and water-resources projects. His expertise includes rehabilitation and design for dams and spillways, dam safety evaluations, and leading multi-disciplinary teams to solve complex dam engineering problems.
Some of his projects include supporting the California Department of Water Resources with the repair of the Oroville Dam Spillway after the 2017 failure incident. Many of his projects have included the application of sophisticated three and two-dimensional numerical analyses to evaluate the static and seismic stability of aged concrete dams, ranging from the design of penetrations at 100 year old concrete dams to a $100+M dam thickening and rehabilitation at Big Tujunga Dam, which was awarded the US Society on Dams Award of Excellence in the Constructed Project. He is widely published and has presented on these experiences and topics at USSD, ICOLD, ASDSO, and Hydrovision.
Vik is a passionate advocate for the promotion of safe and sustainable dams and water infrastructure, disseminating knowledge to the dams community, and mentoring future engineers.
This presentation will focus on a short career bio and a discussion on engineering consulting as it is applied to large water infrastructure projects, demonstrated through several project case histories. Vik will include broad coverage of the engineering disciplines applied to these projects but also some interesting details on the challenging seismic and
structural evaluations performed. He’ll come prepared to answer your questions and have supplemental detail to present on other aspects of these projects and his related experience.
