Please see below for various updates that were emailed out to SE Undergrads:

  •  Missing a prereq or is the system not recognizing your prereqs? You have two ways to try to deal with that – EASY (easy.ucsd.edu) or petition:
    • Have a prereq but the system isn’t recognizing it? The system usually does not recognize transfer credit or approved petitions/class substitutions when checking for prereqs (ie MAE 8 for SE 9, MAE 131A/B for SE 110A/B, transfer courses, etc).  You can submit an EASY request if this happens.  Please be sure to include relevant notes so that these can be efficiently processed.  The SE Undergrad Advisor can review and approve these if it’s just an issue of the system not recognizing that you do have the prereqs.
    • Don’t have a prereq?  If you are missing a prereq you have to get the instructor’s approval to enroll in their class without the prereq either via EASY or a paper petition.  EASY requests/petitions are routed to the instructor for review.  Getting instructor approval can take time.

  • Effective Fall 2019 SE 101A/MAE 130A, SE 101B/MAE 130B, amd SE 101C/MAE 130C are no longer crosslisted.  The SE Dept will not allow the new MAE versions of these classes to be substituted for the SE versions.

  • Effective Fall 2019 MAE 131A/B can be petitioned in place of SE 110A/B but the following applies: 1) Students must stick with one department (MAE  or SE) to take both Solid Mechanics classes, 2) the MAE classes can only be taken during the regular academic year (not summer).

  • Effective Fall 2019 SE Advising has moved to new walk-in times and an appointment based schedule.  Please review the "Advisor Information" page including a live calendar of walk-in and appointment availability.  Please check the live calendar as advising times may change due to meetings and other events.

Prereqs and course renumbering:

  • Effective Spring 2020 SE 104/104L is being changed to SE 105.  SE 104L will be offered in Spring 2020 only for students that have completed SE 104 but need SE 104L.  Enrollment for SE 104L will be set to zero and students will need to contact SE Advising to get authorization to enroll in SE 104L.

  • Effective 19-20 academic year SE 131 will become SE 131A and for 19-20 will be offered in Winter quarter rather than Spring quarter. Notes: Dropped SE 121B prereq since SE 121B is now becoming SE 131B.  Coreqs are not enforced by the registration system and are more so recommendations based on what faculty think will help for the class.  Class being offered in Winter rather than Spring this year.  Course intended to be taken "junior" year.

  • Effective 19-20 academic year SE 121B will become SE 131B and for 19-20 will be offered in Spring quarter rather than Winter quarter. Notes: Essentially switched order of SE121B and SE 131.  Dropped prereq of SE 121A, and added prereqs of SE 131A (or SE 131) and SE 130B.  Class being offered in Spring rather than Winter this year.  Course intended to be taken "senior" year.   20-21 quarter offering still TBD.

  • Effective Fall 2020 SE 121A will become SE 102 (no changes to prereqs)

  • SE 140A and SE 140B class title updates (effective Winter 2020) changes from Professional Issues and Design for Civil Structures I and II to Design of Civil Structures I and II

  • SE 142 dropped SE 160A prereq (effective Fall 2020)

Technical Electives:

  • If you complete ENG 100D + ENG 100L for a TE, please send a VAC message to SE Advising so that your degree audit can be updated (please only do this once both classes show in your academic record, ie have completed them or are enrolled in them)

  • Fall 2019 updates:
    • Removed MAE 131C and MAE 143C since these classes have been discontinued by the MAE dept
    • Updated MAE 110A-B to list MAE 110 (no longer offered as A and B, just one class)
    • Added MAE 124 and MAE 184 to pre-approved list
    • MAE 140 has been changed to MAE 40 and will no longer be approved in the new MAE 40 version since it is now lower division (previously completed MAE 140 classes will still count)
    • Students can petition up to one upper-division Urban Studies and Planning class (USP) to count as a TE.  Students interested in this should file their petition prior to enrolling in the USP class.
